DAISY MAY COOPER CONFIRMS THIS COUNTRY WON’T RETURN

Daisy May Cooper, the beloved actress and co-creator of the hit BBC sitcom This Country, has confirmed that the show won’t be making a return, citing her dramatic weight loss as a key factor.

Cooper, who rose to fame portraying the feisty and hilarious Kerry Mucklowe, shared screens with her brother Charlie Cooper, who played her cousin Kurtan. The mockumentary-style comedy captured the day-to-day life of young adults navigating the rural Cotswolds town of Cirencester, earning critical acclaim for its sharp wit and authentic humour.

The series aired from 2017 to 2020, spanning three successful seasons before ending. Since then, Daisy has undergone a transformative health journey, losing an incredible 10 stone over the past two years. While the change has had a positive impact on her health, it has also meant she can no longer step back into the shoes of Kerry, unless the character underwent some extreme fictional circumstances.

Speaking to Radio Times, Daisy joked:

“We can’t do This Country, though, because I’ve lost so much weight and I’ve had my lips done. We’d have to say that Kerry’s had a tapeworm and been stung by a bee.”

Despite the end of the series, Daisy and her brother are already exploring new opportunities together. She revealed:

“It’s early days but we’re working on something unscripted.”

Daisy’s weight loss journey has also sparked conversations about body image and societal expectations of women in comedy. On the BBC podcast How To Be In The Spotlight, she addressed the backlash she has received from some who claim she is “no longer funny” following her transformation:

“I’m so for body positivity but when I was at my biggest I was at my most miserable and I had a massive food addiction. And I’ve had some messages like, ‘Well, now you’ve lost the weight you’re not funny any more.’ Why do women have to be fat to be funny? That makes me so angry. I champion anybody. I think everybody should be happy with their body. But I wasn’t.”

Her honesty has been widely praised by fans and fellow comedians alike. Daisy’s candid discussion highlights the double standards women face in the entertainment industry, where appearance is often scrutinised in a way that male counterparts rarely experience.

Throughout her career, Daisy has been celebrated for her comedic timing, relatability, and fearless approach to social commentary. While This Country may not return, fans can rest assured that Daisy and Charlie’s creative partnership is far from over. Their new unscripted project promises to deliver the same humour and heart that made This Country a cultural phenomenon.

In the meantime, Daisy continues to advocate for body positivity, self-acceptance, and mental health awareness, using her platform to encourage honesty and vulnerability in the public eye. While Kerry Mucklowe may have been left in the past, Daisy May Cooper remains one of the most compelling comedic voices in British television today.
