Coronation Street is rolling out the red carpet, for your dog. ITV has announced a nationwide search for the soap’s newest canine cast member, and your pooch could be the one padding down the famous cobbles of Weatherfield.
In an exciting collaboration with This Morning, the show has launched ‘Pup Idol’, a competition open to the public. Pet owners are being invited to put their furry friends forward for the chance to star in Britain’s longest-running soap opera.

A star-studded judging panel has been revealed, including Strictly Come Dancing head judge Shirley Ballas, Coronation Street actress Jodie Prenger (Glenda Shuttleworth), and celebrity vet Dr Scott Miller. Together, they’ll sniff out the top dog who has the temperament, talent and charm to join Weatherfield’s storied line-up of soap dogs, from Schmeichel the Great Dane to Eccles the Border Terrier.
‘The best little pup in Great Britain’
Speaking about what she’s looking for, Shirley Ballas said:
“We’ll be looking for the best little pup in Great Britain, so I’m very excited about that and would like to see that we have some obedience. Good behaviour, we’re looking for something with a really good temperament. The dog will also have to be loving, kind, caring, well-groomed and not easily distracted on TV sets. Maybe some good little tricks would be nice too!”
Jodie Prenger also shared her excitement in a short film recorded on the famous street itself.
“From Schmeichel to Eccles, many paws have graced these famous cobbles, and they’ve probably cocked their legs on a few lamp posts as well! Your furry friend could be joining that illustrious list. I’m so excited to be part of the judging panel putting the pups through their paces to see who will win the walk-on part in the nation’s favourite soap.”
