Pop superstar Charli XCX is proving she’s more than just a queen of futuristic pop, she’s also a full-on film geek.
The “360” and Speed Drive singer has begun regularly sharing her personal movie reviews on TikTok, offering unfiltered takes on everything from cult horror to French New Wave and Y2K rom-coms. The clips have quickly gained traction among fans, showing a whole new side of the artist just as her new album BRAT continues to dominate playlists.
Charli kicked off her cinematic commentary earlier this month, talking fans through a wildly eclectic viewing list that included M. Night Shyamalan’s The Happening, Pier Paolo Pasolini’s infamous Salo, Sofia Coppola’s dreamy Lost In Translation, and even the latest Bridget Jones entry, Mad About the Boy.
The singer, 31, also revealed that she’s active on Letterboxd, the social platform for film buffs, where she tracks everything she watches, giving her followers an even deeper dive into her cinematic brain.
In her latest TikTok, Charli offered an impromptu mini-review of Danny Boyle’s much-anticipated horror sequel 28 Years Later, the follow-up to his 2002 hit 28 Days Later and 2007’s 28 Weeks Later.
“I literally watched 28 Years Later between soundcheck and going on stage at Dua Lipa’s show last week,” she shared. “Danny Boyle is BACK!”
Charli’s unique energy and offbeat analysis have made the videos a hit with both longtime fans and a younger TikTok crowd, who see her as the ultimate cool older sister who listens to Arca and also loves a messy disaster movie.
While she hasn’t said if the series will become a permanent feature, fans are already asking for a dedicated #CharliMovieClub, and the comments are flooded with recommendations from Tarantino to Takashi Miike.
It’s just the latest creative outlet for Charli, who continues to bridge pop culture and high art in unexpected ways. And judging by her film taste, she’s not afraid to get a little weird with it, and we love her for it.
