Fans of Call The Midwife are in for a treat as a brand-new prequel series has been announced, taking viewers back in time to World War II. The beloved BBC drama is set to explore the wartime years of Nonnatus House, shedding light on the early lives of some of the series' most iconic characters.
The prequel will transport audiences to the turbulent era of the Blitz, where familiar faces will be seen in their younger years. Expected to appear are Fred Buckle, Dr Turner, and a trio of the show's beloved nuns—Sister Julienne, Sister Evangelina, and Sister Monica Joan, who are all known to have lived through the chaos of the conflict. This glimpse into the past promises to uncover the origins of the selflessness, resilience, and unwavering faith that have defined these characters for over a decade.
Series creator and writer Heidi Thomas has expressed her excitement about exploring this untold chapter in the Call The Midwife universe. Reflecting on her inspiration for the prequel, she said: “The opening of new doors at Nonnatus House feels profoundly emotional, and yet just right. I have never run out of stories for our midwives, and I never will. But having wept, laughed, and raged my way from 1957 to 1971, I found myself yearning to delve into the deeper past.”
For Thomas, the wartime setting is rich with dramatic potential. “The Blitz years in the East End were extraordinary, filled with loss, togetherness, courage, and joy. The bombs fell, the babies kept on coming, and the Sisters kept on going," she added, promising that the prequel will offer plenty of nostalgia for long-time fans, while also serving as a perfect starting point for newcomers.
But the prequel is just one of several new developments for Call The Midwife. The show will continue with its conventional format, returning for a 15th series that includes a special two-part Christmas episode. And as if that wasn’t enough, a movie adaptation is also in the works, taking the heartwarming stories of Poplar’s midwives to the big screen for the first time.

The upcoming festive special, part of the 15th series, will maintain the show’s traditional setting in Poplar but will also take viewers to Hong Kong, adding a fresh twist to the familiar Christmas magic.
With a prequel, a new series, and a movie on the horizon, Call The Midwife is set to continue its legacy of heartfelt storytelling, offering fans even more of the emotional, inspiring tales they love.
