Chris Brown has officially pleaded not guilty to a grievous bodily harm charge following his dramatic arrest in Manchester last month, and it’s making headlines for all the wrong reasons.
The R&B superstar, known for hits like ‘Loyal’ and ‘With You’, appeared at Southwark Crown Court this week to deny allegations stemming from an incident at a London nightclub in 2023. Prosecutors allege that Brown violently assaulted a music producer during a heated altercation, using a tequila bottle as a weapon.
The 35-year-old singer had flown into Manchester on a private jet last month ahead of his scheduled UK tour dates. However, before he could even check into his suite at The Lowry Hotel, Metropolitan Police swooped in and arrested him on suspicion of grievous bodily harm.
In a twist that had fans fearing the worst for his ongoing ‘11:11’ tour, Brown was later released on a staggering £5 million bail. He has since been allowed to travel internationally, ensuring that his tour dates, and his career, remained temporarily unaffected.
However, all eyes were on him as he entered the courtroom this week. According to BBC News, Brown appeared relaxed, even flashing a cheeky wink and smile at a female spectator in the gallery while waiting for proceedings to begin. When Judge Baumgartner finally took her seat, Brown confirmed his name and date of birth before clearly responding to the central question of the day. When asked how he pleaded to the charge of grievous bodily harm, Brown replied confidently:
“Not guilty, ma’am.”
The court also acknowledged that Brown is facing additional charges, including assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon. The offensive weapon in question? A bottle of tequila.
