“Time to bow out”: Iconic BBC period drama set for final episodes in 2026…
After more than a decade of heartwarming stories and tear-jerking moments, Call The Midwife will officially come to an end, the BBC has confirmed.
The long-running period drama, which first aired in 2012 and has become a Sunday night staple for millions, will wrap up after its 15th series airs in January 2026. Filming for the final episodes is already underway, with the cast and crew preparing to say an emotional farewell to Nonnatus House.
According to The Daily Star, BBC bosses want the award-winning show to "go out on a high" and give the cherished characters a proper send-off. A source told the publication:
“After years of drama and countless births, Call The Midwife is coming to an end. The team have decided it’s time to draw the show to a close and bow out. This is the last we’ll see of these much-loved characters. Storylines will tie up a lot of loose ends.”
Set in the East End of London and based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth, Call The Midwife has chronicled the lives of midwives, nurses, and nuns navigating love, loss, and change during some of the most transformative decades in British history.
Starring Helen George, Jenny Agutter, and Laura Main, the series has become a critical and viewer favourite, regularly drawing in millions of viewers and praised for tackling complex social issues, from poverty and abortion to racism and domestic violence.

Fans have already begun sharing emotional reactions online, with many calling it “the end of an era.” While the show has continued to evolve with new cast members and storylines over the years, it has always held a special place in viewers’ hearts for its warmth, emotional depth, and timeless messages of community and care.
The BBC has yet to announce any specific plans for commemorating the show’s finale, but speculation is rife that a major tribute or retrospective could air alongside the final season.
So, as we prepare to say goodbye to Poplar’s beloved midwives, fans can look forward to one final series that promises to be as powerful and poignant as ever.
