Britney Spears has once again opened up about the emotional toll of her conservatorship, admitting that she sometimes turns to alcohol to cope with heartache. The 42-year-old pop icon shared her candid thoughts in a social media post on Thursday, alongside images of a golden chalice and past magazine photoshoots taken during the 13-year legal arrangement that controlled many aspects of her life.
Reflecting on her struggles, Britney revealed that she was "100% abused" during the conservatorship and that her attempts to speak out were met with further mistreatment. "I don't like drinking," she wrote. "I do it for my heart when it's been through too much, but I'm weird. I take on a lot of pain. I honestly shouldn't, and I put in a lot of work people will never see."
The "Toxic" singer detailed how the conservatorship dictated her daily life, from where she went to who she saw and even what she ate. "I was in a business that preyed over the innocent and controlled where I went, who I saw, what I ate, which is 100% unfair, and if I spoke up, I was abused and I never did anything wrong!!!" she stated.
The conservatorship, which lasted from 2008 until its termination in 2021, was primarily overseen by her father, Jamie Spears. Throughout the years, Britney has been vocal about the restrictive and allegedly abusive conditions she endured, previously claiming she was forced to take medication and undergo medical treatments against her will.
In her latest post, Spears also reflected on her experiences in the entertainment industry, revealing that the only time she ever felt truly "beautiful" in a photoshoot was when she worked with photographer Ellen Von Unwerth in New York. Her comments highlight the deep impact of the conservatorship on her self-perception and personal autonomy.
As Britney continues to navigate life post-conservatorship, she has recently rekindled her relationship with former housekeeper Paul Soliz, following her divorce from Sam Asghari in 2023. Despite the challenges she has faced, her latest revelations show her determination to reclaim her narrative and speak openly about her past.
