U2 frontman Bono has opened up about a surprising emotional wrinkle in his decades-long marriage, his wife Ali Hewson’s enduring friendship with his bandmate and guitarist, The Edge.
The rock legend, who has been married to Ali since 1982, made the rare personal admission during an interview on Australia’s The Project, while promoting his new documentary Bono: Stories of Surrender.
Though Bono and Ali share four children and one of rock music’s most iconic partnerships, the singer confessed that her close connection to The Edge, real name David Evans, has remained a touchy topic over the years.

“It’s still a sore subject,” he revealed with a wry smile, reflecting on their early years.
Bono explained that he, Ali, and David were all students at Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin. Ali and The Edge were both a year below him and, in Bono’s words, “the two cleverest in their year.”
But it wasn’t just academic talent that sparked some early jealousy, it was music.
“She did seem to be taking an interest in his guitar playing,” Bono said, half-joking. “And as hard as I might practise, I just knew I couldn’t touch this guy. So I had to become, you know, the class clown.”
While it’s clear Bono is speaking with affection and humour, his comments offer a rare glimpse into the personal dynamics behind one of music’s most enduring bands. He added that Ali and The Edge are “still close” and even joked that “they still talk about me behind my back.”
The friendship between Ali and The Edge has spanned decades, surviving fame, family life, and U2’s towering success. Yet Bono’s playful honesty shows that even rock royalty isn’t immune to the quiet insecurities that can linger in long-term relationships.
Bono: Stories of Surrender, which accompanies his 2022 memoir Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story, delves into his life, music, activism, and relationships, and promises fans a more intimate portrait than ever before.
With this latest reveal, it’s clear Bono isn’t just surrendering the stage, he’s surrendering some long-guarded truths too.
