Billie Eilish has opened up about her deeply personal struggles with body image in an emotional new interview with British Vogue, revealing that she has never truly felt beautiful, despite being one of the most recognisable and influential stars of her generation.
The Grammy and Oscar-winning singer appears on the cover of Vogue’s May edition, where she takes part in a unique feature answering questions from some of her biggest celebrity fans and friends. But it was a poignant question from rapper Nicki Minaj that moved Eilish to tears.
Minaj asked: “This may be an odd question, but you seem to be a bit uncomfortable with how beautiful you are at times. I could be wrong. Many women from all walks of life have felt that their work was overshadowed by their beauty or their physical attributes. Was there ever a time in your career, or before you made it, when you wished people couldn’t see you and that they could only hear the music, and really get a chance to just listen to the written words?”
Billie’s candid response struck a chord. “Nicki, this question made me tear up a little,” she replied. “I’ve never really felt very beautiful or seen myself in that way, so I definitely never struggled with the idea that it would overshadow anything, since I didn’t even really see it myself.”
She went on to admit, “I’ve had to really convince myself that I am beautiful. Being a woman is hard.”
Eilish has long been praised for her honesty surrounding topics like mental health, body image, and fame. But this latest revelation offers a raw look at how even global success doesn’t silence self-doubt, especially in an industry where women are often judged as much for their appearance as for their artistry.
Fashion designer Stella McCartney also touched on the subject of self-image when asking about Billie’s decision to go vegan. Eilish admitted she initially adopted the lifestyle in an effort to change her body.
“I was vegetarian and then went vegan a few years after, which was mainly because I hated my body and I thought I would lose weight,” she revealed. “But then I learnt all about the dairy industry and the completely horrific and disturbing animal agriculture that we all just pretend is normal and OK.”
Her responses paint a picture of a young woman navigating the pressures of fame with honesty and vulnerability, and continuing to grow into her own voice, both musically and personally. As she graces the cover of British Vogue, Billie Eilish reminds the world that beauty, confidence, and self-acceptance are often hard-won, even for a superstar.
