Comedy icon and beloved actor Bill Murray has shared candid thoughts about the darker side of fame, admitting that his early brush with celebrity status led to some regrettable behaviour.
Speaking to The Times, the 73-year-old star reflected on how fame affected him in his younger years.
“Your first brush with fame, it's not like it got any bigger but you lose control for a year or two,” Murray said. “You make a lot of mistakes, you do a lot of stupid things, and you allow people to fluff you up.”
“You Need an Ego, But You Need to Watch It”
The Ghostbusters and Groundhog Day star acknowledged that ego is an essential part of being a performer, but it needs careful management.
“You have to have an ego to work with. You need it to get the work done,” he explained. “It’s not important to try to change your ego, or to keep it in check, or dial it down. What’s important is to watch it.”

Fallout from Allegations
Murray’s comments come in the wake of a sexual misconduct allegation made against him in 2022, which led to the shutdown of the film Being Mortal. Though he did not go into full detail, he addressed the situation in previous interviews, calling the incident “a joke that wasn’t taken well.”
Before recounting the alleged incident, Murray admitted: “I dunno what prompted me to do it. It’s something that I had done to someone else before, and I thought it was funny.”
Reflecting, Not Retiring
While the controversy has impacted his reputation, Murray remains an active figure in film and media, albeit with a more introspective tone. Fans and critics alike have praised his willingness to reflect on fame, ego, and responsibility, even if it’s taken decades to do so.
