Legendary musician Billy Joel has announced the cancellation of all his upcoming tour dates through July 2026 due to a recent diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a rare brain disorder.
The 76-year-old singer-songwriter revealed that the condition has affected his hearing, vision, and balance, leading to the difficult decision to step back from performing to focus on his health.
NPH is characterised by a buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain, which can cause symptoms such as cognitive impairment, difficulty walking, and urinary issues. Joel's diagnosis came after a fall during a February concert in Connecticut, an incident now believed to be linked to the disorder. Following medical advice, he is currently undergoing physical therapy and will refrain from performing during his recovery.
The cancellation affects 17 shows, including performances in the U.S., U.K., and Ireland, some of which were to feature co-headliners like Stevie Nicks and Rod Stewart. All ticket holders will receive automatic refunds.
Despite the setback, Joel and his team remain optimistic about his recovery. NPH is often treatable with surgical intervention, such as the implantation of a shunt to drain excess fluid, and many patients experience significant improvement in symptoms.
Joel expressed his gratitude to fans for their understanding and support during this time, emphasising his commitment to prioritising his health. He looks forward to returning to the stage once he has fully recovered.
This development comes after Joel's historic 10-year residency at Madison Square Garden concluded in July 2024, marking a significant chapter in his illustrious career.
Fans worldwide are sending their best wishes to the "Piano Man" as he focuses on his health and recovery.
