Arnold Schwarzenegger Says ‘Twins’ Made Him More Money Than Any Other Film

Arnold Schwarzenegger has revealed the unexpected film that made him the most money throughout his blockbuster Hollywood career, and it wasn’t Terminator, Predator, or Total Recall.
It was, in fact, the 1988 comedy Twins, where he starred opposite Danny DeVito as one half of a genetically engineered sibling duo.

Appearing on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Arnie shocked the audience when he confirmed that Twins brought in his biggest personal payday to date.

“It was fantastic,” the 76-year-old said. “We went all the way to the bank with that one.”

When Cohen pressed him on the number, asking if he made more than $40 million, Arnie didn’t hesitate.

“Well above that,” he confirmed with a smile.

Directed by Ivan Reitman, Twins became an instant comedy hit, grossing over $216 million worldwide on a modest $18 million budget. The film was a departure from Schwarzenegger’s usual action-hero fare and marked his first major foray into comedy.

In Twins, Schwarzenegger plays Julius Benedict, a highly intelligent, physically superior man who learns he has a long-lost twin brother, Vincent, portrayed by Danny DeVito, who couldn’t be more different in size or temperament. The duo’s chemistry and the absurd premise made it a fan favourite and a commercial smash.

The secret behind its financial success for Arnie and DeVito? They didn’t take upfront salaries. Instead, the pair agreed to a percentage of the profits, a move that paid off enormously.

Schwarzenegger has often spoken about the power of smart deals in Hollywood, and this is a prime example.

“We had a percentage of the film rather than a big salary, and it paid off big time,” he explained in previous interviews.

Now, over 35 years since the film’s release, Twins still holds a special place in pop culture, and clearly, in Arnie’s bank account.
