And Just Like That… Spin-Off Officially Cancelled After Three Seasons

It’s the end of the road for And Just Like That…, the reboot of the iconic Sex and the City series. After three seasons, the show will not return for a fourth, with producers confirming that the series will wrap up with a two-part finale.

The revival saw Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis step back into the high-heeled shoes of their beloved characters, Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda Hobbes and Charlotte York, more than two decades after the original series first aired.

When it launched in 2021, And Just Like That… was billed as a nostalgic return to the glamorous, witty, and heartfelt world of Sex and the City. But instead of unanimous praise, the series quickly became a lightning rod for criticism.

Fans of the original were vocal about their disappointment, calling the reboot “cringeworthy,” “self-indulgent,” and “a pale shadow” of the original. Some even went so far as to say it had “ruined” the once-beloved characters. The show’s overtly political and socially conscious tone, labelled by detractors as “too woke”, also divided audiences.

Showrunner Michael Patrick King confirmed the decision to end the series earlier this week, telling media outlets:

“We’re incredibly proud of the stories we’ve told, the conversations we’ve started, and the risks we’ve taken. But every show has its natural life, and this feels like the right time to bring it to a close.”

“I am profoundly sad… 400 artisans pouring their hearts into this show.”, Davis, 60, sharing her love for the cast & crew.

The reboot faced its first major hurdle before it even premiered, when original cast member Kim Cattrall declined to reprise her role as fan favourite Samantha Jones. While the writers made attempts to address her absence, many fans felt the heart, and humour, of the series was missing without her.

Despite the criticism, And Just Like That… still drew an audience. Loyal fans tuned in for new stories about love, friendship, and life in New York City, albeit with a more mature and sometimes more serious lens than the original show. Guest appearances, such as Cattrall’s surprise cameo in Season 2, helped generate buzz and gave nostalgic fans a reason to tune in.

However, as the seasons went on, ratings reportedly declined, and online chatter became increasingly negative. The backlash was relentless, with social media full of think pieces, memes, and opinion threads dissecting each new episode.

The show’s final two episodes, set to air later this year, are being described as a “celebratory send-off” for the surviving trio of friends. Whether that will be enough to satisfy its critics remains to be seen.

For fans who fell in love with Sex and the City back in 1998, this marks the end of yet another era. While And Just Like That… may not have lived up to the magic of the original for many viewers, it did offer a final chapter for characters who have been part of pop culture for more than 25 years.
