In one of the more unexpected viral moments of the Oasis reunion tour so far, Richard Ashcroft has weighed in on a fan who was caught on camera Shazaming his biggest hit, Bittersweet Symphony, during his support set in Cardiff last week.
The memorable scene unfolded at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium, where Liam and Noel Gallagher reunited for their first shows together in 16 years. With two sold-out nights in Wales, the gigs marked the beginning of what’s already shaping up to be one of the most talked-about tours of the year.
Before the Gallagher brothers took the stage, fans were treated to warm-up performances from Cast and Richard Ashcroft, the former frontman of The Verve, whose 1997 hit Bittersweet Symphony remains one of the defining songs of the Britpop era.
But not everyone in the packed stadium seemed to know that.
During Ashcroft’s stirring performance of the song, a concertgoer was filmed holding their phone up to the speakers and using Shazam, the popular app that identifies music by listening to a snippet, to discover what was playing.

The clip quickly spread on social media, with many fans expressing disbelief that someone could attend an Oasis gig and not know one of Britpop’s most iconic tracks.
“Honestly cannot believe someone had to Shazam Bittersweet Symphony at an Oasis gig,” one user wrote on X. “Where have they been for the last 25 years?”
Another added: “The state of the younger generation. Great to see them at gigs, but some things you should just know.”
Others, however, jumped to the fan’s defence. “Why are people being snobby?” one commenter said. “Better to discover great music late than never. At least they cared enough to find out who sang it!”
It wasn’t long before Richard Ashcroft himself joined the conversation, and he handled it with trademark cool.
Posting on Instagram, the singer wrote:
“Day two. Thanks to everyone who came down and gave such beautiful support for my set. If you don’t know it, Shazam it, all new fans welcome! Love to Liam Gallagher for Cast No Shadow, what a tune! We move on, Manchester. Are you ready? Music is power. RA.”
Fans have praised Ashcroft’s attitude, calling it “classy” and “exactly how an artist should react.”
One fan summed it up perfectly: “This is why Richard Ashcroft is one of the greats. No ego, just love for the music and anyone who connects with it.”
The Oasis tour now heads to Manchester, where two more sold-out nights await. And if the Cardiff shows are anything to go by, more viral moments, and more iconic singalongs, are guaranteed.
