Adeje residents are better served by their Local Police than any of Tenerife’s other 30 municipalities. Town hall forces have had a significant boost in manpower over the past year and the southern local authority has the largest complement outside the metropolitan area, according to the island Cabildo.
There are 136 officers covering Adeje on a budget of more than 3.77 million euros which means 4.49 per 1,000 inhabitants based on a 2004 population figure of just over 30,300, greater than Puerto de la Cruz. The Canarian Government’s recommended ratio is 1.8 per 1,000 residents and the Tenerife average is 1.76, representing a shortfall of 34 officers. Arona, Adeje’s larger neighbour with nearly 59,400 residents, has 130 Local Police costing 2.3 million euros and a ratio of 2.19 officers per 1,000 inhabitants. Granadilla de Abona’s 46 officers serve almost 30,800 people (1.5), San Miguel de Abona has 19 for a population of 10,800 (1.76) and Santiago de Teide employs 17 to attend to almost the same number (1.58). Capital Santa Cruz has a 409-strong force on a budget of nearly 20.285 million euros, but, with a population close to 220,000, the city can muster only 1.86 officers for every 1,000 inhabitants. |
