News in Brief
Live Arico Update Our thanks to … All involved in last Sunday’s benefit at Legends Bar, Los Cristianos. We raised 260 euros in extremely warm conditions, so well done to all. Thanks to owners Graham and Carol for the lovely buffet, all the hard-working staff, entertainers Suzy Q, Avril Taylor, Michaela as Tina Turner and Phil Gibson. We were also lucky to have some young, talented performers from Estrellas Theatre School and Wingate - Jordanna Burridge, Luke Towler, JJ Gibson, Mathew Marshall, Bailey and Alfie Havenhand. Lastly, thanks to Trish for sorting out the raffle, and for prize donations from Cloud 9, the Surrey Arms and Megabowl, to name but a few. Holiday raffle bonanza Details of a fantastic, fund-raising raffle, run by Thomson Holidays and First Choice in aid of Live Arico and the Family Holiday Association, have already been printed in Canarian Weekly. If you missed the story, please contact Suzy Q on the number below for more details about your chance to win a fabulous holiday by buying some tickets, and helping our dogs (and the FHA) in the process. Upcoming events On Wednesday (22nd Sept), we have a fund-raiser at the Ocean View Bar, Hotel Comodoro, Los Cristianos. Tickets are just six euros and include live entertainment, plus a delicious pie-and-pea supper. Call Suzy on 629 388 102 to get your tickets, or pop into the bar. The following Sunday (26th Sept), we will be holding a dog show. Venue and details will be confirmed ASAP, but put it in your diaries for now. Also, on that Sunday, there’s a benefit at La Guagua, Fañabe Beach Front. Details to be confirmed next week. Tired of boot sales? Sell your unwanted items in a more tranquil environment every Sunday at the Terrace Bar, Amarilla Golf, from 11-3pm. Revised adoption procedures A minimum 50-euro donation for an adopted male dog, and 75 euros for a female, is now required by Live Arico. This is paid direct to Hospivet Sur on collection of your new pet, which will be chipped, neutered, vaccinated and wormed.
South Tenerife Rescue Centre We have sold 509 square metres of land up to now, making a total of 2,545 euros, which is a magnificent achievement. The plan to buy our own plot of land remains, possibly even where we are now renting, so are you prepared to buy a square metre of land for Live Arico? At just five euros, you will receive a certificate from Live Arico for now, and your name, address and number of square metres purchased will be on a Roll of Honour at the new refuge. Live Arico Flight Line Anyone booking flights to and from the UK with the Live Arico Flight Line will get them at competitive prices, and will also help our dogs. Call now on 922 794 918 and please quote Live Arico Flightline. Dog-grooming Claire is now offering 10% of her fee to Live Arico. She has 18 years of experience, so call her on 660 862 910 for an appointment, and quote Live Arico so we can receive our donation. Live Arico Shop news (in association with Tenerife Nursing and Care) As you probably know by now, the shop is now on the frontline of Coral Mar, at ground level, next door to the Coral Bar. This makes life far easier for everyone: cars unloading can park right outside, and our elderly and disabled customers no longer have to negotiate the stairs. We now have a fantastic range of hand-made cards for all occasions. They are decorated beautifully and cost from two euros. We are also grateful for items of furniture as we are working in conjunction with Fish for Furniture, at Los Abrigos, and Idea, in Adeje. Call Rick to arrange pick-ups. We are also grateful to receive any donations of cat and dog food at the shop. Through popular demand, the shop is now open at the following times: Mon-Fri: 10-4pm. Sat: 10-2. Sunday: Closed. The shop will also be open when there’s an event on in Coral Mar Square, Live Arico hot lines For any questions about the shop, the dogs or Live Arico, or if you would like to make a donation and need somebody to pick it up, call Debbie on the number below. Now there’s keep-fit classes for your dogs DANNI BYRNE, Canarian Weekly’s resident keep-fit expert, is about to embark on her most unusual challenge yet: getting a group of dogs into shape! In conjunction with Aktiontier, the dog sanctuary based at Accion del Sol, Granadilla, she is launching a keep-fit club for your dogs On Thursday, 16th September. The aim is to provide owners and their dogs with more physical and mental stimulation. Aktiontier fund-raiser Karen Clack, who is behind the project with Danni (of Tenerife Fitness), says: “We intend to start with a couple of walks. “We’ll begin at the Arona Grand Hotel, in Los Cristianos, at 6.30pm, and then go on to do various agility games with your dog to get your heart rate up - and both of you moving. “It’s a fun way for both parties to get fit, and it will boost your metabolism and burn off more calories. It’s also a great way for your dog and you to socialise more and make new friends.” The cost is just three euros per session, and if you want more details, please contact Karen (687 905 511) or Danni (619 008 035) if you have any fitness queries. Karen adds: “Everybody is welcome to join, and we even have refuge dogs who would love to take part if you don’t have your own dog. They would love to partner them.” The second doggie keep-fit meeting will be held on the 30th September at 6.30pm near the children’s play area in Fanabe, behind the Adeje Grand Hotel. Incidentally, Aktiontier officials have issued a plea to anyone finding a dog abandoned on the streets. Call the correct number for your area featured here and the police will inform Protection Civil, who will collect the animal and take it to the appropriate legal refuge. There, the dog will immediately receive medical care/treatment, de-flead, wormed, castrated/sterilised, micro-chipped, and be given the necessary injections, including rabies, and issued with its passport. Should the dog be micro-chipped already, then the owner will be contacted and the animal returned to him/her. But owners will be prosecuted if the dog has been abandoned or ill-treated. Karen says: “If you really want to help the situation here in the south of Tenerife, then we all need to work in a legal and correct way. “Every dog collected by Protection Civil is paid for by the Town Hall covering the area in which the dog is found. Call one of the following local police numbers to help a stray dog: San Miguel: 922 700 807, Granadilla: 922 759 911, Arona: 922 725 562, Las Galletas: 922 053 032, Guia de Isora: 922 850 101, Adeje: 922 716 508.
