La mar de limpia - 23.07.2010
Sing up to the Council of Tenerife's campaign "La mar de limpia" and help clean up the island's beaches

The Council of Tenerife has launched the 4th edition of the "La mar de limpia" ("Clean Seas") campaign, with the objective of cleaning up the coast of Tenerife. This year the beaches to be cleaned will be Candelaria (21st August), and San Marcos in Icod (4th September). Sign up to be a volunteer by calling 902 151 261 or get further information at www.idecogestion.net.

This Environment Department initiative is organised by the Office for Environmental Participation and Volunteers of the public company Ideco, and encompasses three activities to be carried out on different locations on the coast of the island during the months of July, August, and September. The objective of the initiative is to clean up the urban waste which ends up on some of the beaches of the coast of Tenerife. Users of the coast will also be informed of the importance of keeping this environment in the best condition. The campaign aims to raise awareness in the local and tourist populations on the importance of protecting and conserving marine biodiversity. Moreover, these activities help to conserve the marine environment, improving conditions in an area which serves as a refuge and resting place for an important number of animals and plants. The activities announced for the three beaches will begin at 10 am and will last for four hours, during which the beaches will be cleaned with the collaboration of the respective town councils and social organisations. Complementary activities – such as workshops and the release of turtles from the La Tahonilla Centre for the Recovery of Wild Fauna by means of the Neotrópico Foundation – will also be taking place.
