THE Aktionier rescue shelter for dogs staged an agility event at their Summer Fiesta last Sunday, which saw all types and breeds strut their stuff.
The competition attracted 33 entries and the winner, Mona Lisa, owned by Jens, was a picture of composure, as was runner-up Axel, owned by Alexandra Le Glaz. In third place was Marcelo’s dog, Agro
There was a terrific turn-out at the German dog refuge, called Accion Del Sol, which is based at the Granadilla Industrial Estate (underneath the windmills).
Aktionier has been operating there for four years and is managed by Marion Gonzalez, who works closely with the Town Halls at San Miguel, Guia De Isora and Granadilla.
It caters for up to 200 dogs, and the superb facilities include purpose-built kennels, large play areas, an in-house vet and modern surgery, plus much more.
Marion, who believes in educating children and the general public about animals, says: “If we educate the next generation about respecting animals, then there is a chance that, as adults, they will be responsible pet owners.
“We regularly invite school groups to the centre so they can learn about the dogs and how the rescue centre works.”
Many dogs at the centre are transported to Germany to loving homes. But since animals can’t travel alone, Aktiontier need people to take them and are continually looking for helpers.
If you would like to volunteer to help at the shelter, or accompany a dog to Germany, please ring 922 778 630, or email teneriffa@aktiontier.org.
Karen Clack, who works as a fund-raiser for the centre, said: I’m planning for a group of people to climb Mount Teide on 25th July at 2.30am to see the sunrise at 7am.
“This is a sponsored event to raise money for Aktiontier, and there are a few places left if anyone else would like to join us.”
Karen is also starting a dog agility club on Wednesday (30th June) at Accion Del Sol, and anyone interested should call her on 687 905 511 for more details.
