Yacht sinks in Santa Cruz - 12.03.2010
A yacht sinks after catching fire in Santa Cruz. The three occupants of the boat were rescued by a barge attached to the Port Authority.

A spectacular fire sparked and ended with the sinking of a yacht on the outside of the fishing dock at the port of Santa Cruz, with no reported personal injury despite the intensity of the flames.

The fire occurred around 16:00 hours on the boat Guadalupe I, nine meters in length and in which sailed three people, residents of Santa Cruz, who were unable to cope with the incident and that they had no other option except to hastily leave the yacht. The fact that the fiberglass was the main component of the rugged boat prevented the fire being controlled.

The flames got so extreme that a barge attached to the Port Authority, called Alice, went at full speed to the area to make it safe and to the three occupants who used a dinghy. Next, a ship, the Salvamar Tenerife, tried to extinguish the fire but the voracity of the fire prevented it from succeeding in that mission.

The exact cause of the incident is unknown, although it is assumed to have had some mechanical source.
