
Its the first positive sign in months; visitor figures to Tenerife recorded an increase of 2.36 percent in January 2010.
Tenerife, for the month of January received a total of 389,714 tourists, which means an increase of 2.36 percent. According to the vice president of the Cabildo, and, Insular de Turismo Jose Manuel Bermudez, "it is the first positive result since last August and, although it is good news, we take this data with caution. Although it is too early for a reliable glimpse there are signs of recovery, "it is true that since the last quarter of last year the decline has been tempering tourists, especially in hotels, some indicators that make us moderately optimistic but also forcing us to work harder to recover if possible the number of guests.” Data published by AENA international passenger arrivals to the island also corroborate the perception of some improvement or at least containment of falls in previous months in visitor numbers. According to this source, it is only the island of Tenerife, next to La Palma, which recorded increases of passengers, particularly at 2.5 and 1.5 percent respectively. If we analyse the evolution of the source markets, the Tourism Statistics, prepared by the council and analysed by the Research Department of Tourism of Tenerife, the Spanish market in January experienced an increase of 16.54 percent on a total count of 77,745 tourists staying. With regard to foreign markets, the island housed a total of 311,969 tourists, which indicates a slight decrease of 0.65 percent. However both the British and German markets, the two main foreign markets to the Island, showed a positive trend in the month. In January 115,717 British tourists arrived, a figure which represents an increase of 0.45 percent. The Germans, with 53,624 visitors in the month increased by 2.2 percent, the Nordic market, while keeping a negative development in January with a global drop of 4.20 percent and a figure of 66,275 visitors. Overnight stays registered in January, 3,317,490 in total, fell 3.01 percent compared to January last year. Occupancy rates were 58.81 percent (-1.32 %). However, the hotels recorded an average occupancy of 67.71 percent, up from 0.86 percent and the negative trend (-4.21 percent) was for other accommodation establishments, whose occupation was 50.5 percent. The length of stay during January stood at 8.51 days on average. As the main tourist areas, the South Island hosted the first month of 2010 to 307,604 tourists, or 2.72 percent more than in January 2009. The northern area also had a positive performance in the month as the 67,083 customers staying represent 3.25 percent more than last year. |
