Live Arico Update Eugenio's car has died
This is a long shot, but if anyone knows of a Musso 2.9 engine we could beg, steal, or borrow – okay, not borrow but buy cheaply – please call him on the number below. Our thanks to… All involved in the sponsored horse ride, organised by Karen, which raised 400 euros. Thanks especially to the kind sponsors. The family fun day at the Central Station was, unfortunately, not well supported, but we thank Shona, Ronnie, and the people who turned up to run the stalls. You can’t win ’em all! Whale-watching with Live Arico Our kind friends at the Atlantic Whale Foundation, along with Eden Charter Sailing, would like to invite Live Arico supporters to a morning of whale-watching tomorrow (12th Sept) at 9am. The AWF will be on board with research guides, and all we ask is a minimum 15-euro donation per person. This will be on a first-come, first-served basis, so please call Karen on the number below to organise your place. Upcoming events We are having a benefit night at the Tapas restaurant, San Blas, Golf del Sur, tomorrow (Saturday). With a set menu at just 12.50 euros, this is a great chance to sample some of the best food on the Golf. This is also the night of the Los Abrigos firework display, so you will have a fantastic view from here. There’s also a charity raffle. Please call Suzy Q to book a table, but do hurry because at the time of writing, Tapas are almost fully booked. The following Saturday (19th Sept) sees us at Volare Cabaret Bar, Aguamarina Apartments, Golf del Sur, with a selection of great acts and a raffle. Singer Nikki Baker is organising a benefit at Starlights, Costa del Silencio, on Saturday, 26th September. There will be a buffet, many entertainers, and fantastic raffle prizes. There is a World Animal Day next month, and we have decided to celebrate it with a Dog Show on Sunday, 18th October. It will be held at Coral Mar Square, Costa Silencio, and will start at 3pm. http://www.facebook.com/editalbum.php?oid=146037706638&add=1&htmlup=1#/event.php?eid=146037706638 K9 – a heartfelt plea! The K9 Committee are this week making this heart-rending plea to supporters, friends and well-wishers for funds to keep the entire sanctuary afloat.
MONEY, money, money – as an animal sanctuary we cannot do without it to ensure the dogs and cats are well looked after. There is always money needed for animal food, vet bills, medicines, parasite sprays and a variety of things for the daily, weekly and monthly running of the kennels. We still continue to rescue many dogs and cats, neutering and spaying as we go because the aim is, of course, to stop the breeding. Don’t think that breeding will ever be stopped altogether, though, because some animals escape the net all the time. The thing to remember is that no matter whether we are short of help or money, the same numbers of animals always need to be rescued. The sad truth is that the kennels cost at least as much, if not slightly more, to run than a year ago. Our main problem existing now is that we really are short of money because of the economic climate. It has made funds much more difficult to raise through our markets, car-boot sales and nearly-new sales. In fact, we are raising less than half the total we were a year ago! We thought it was hard then, but now… This is where we are now in terms of finance: we owe the food suppliers 2,500 euros and the veterinary establishments 3,500 euros. This cannot continue. Like all suppliers of services, they need to be paid. They are being patient, but we are at the “red letter” stage. Yet we continue to ask them for their services, paying them only a fraction of what we owe. In the meantime, the animals are well taken care of, much with the help of volunteers, but without an urgent injection of funds, our future looks gloomy and questionable. We hate sending begging letters, but this is one! We are in a desperate financial state and we are asking you, as members and supporters, for extra donations. Your generosity will enable us to continue functioning normally without thoughts of bankruptcy. This can be achieved in the form of donations – large or small – or paying your 20-euro, out-of-date subscription (if applicable). We really need to raise 7,000 euros to clear our debts and get back on even terms, so please dig into your pockets and purses and donate to this worthy cause. Can you really say “no” to all those loveable animals we have in our care? As an organisation, we have faith that you can help the animals in this time of need. Send your cheque, with name and address, to La Presidente, Refugio de Animales (K9), Apartado No 67, Adeje 38670. Make your cheque payable to REFUGIO DE ANIMALES (K9). We will receipt all donations. If you have any problems sending money, telephone 922 782 840, or 922 740 160. Thanking you all in anticipation: the Committee, helpers and animals of K9. Rich charity windfalls for the Helping Hands THE Helping Hands in Tenerife charity have been busy raising much-welcome funds for the Cancer Care Unit at Candelaria. An event at the Terrace Bar on Amarilla Golf attracted 80 friends and supporters of the charity, who enjoyed an afternoon barbecue and partied on into the night. They were entertained by tribute bands ABBA, Frank Sinatra, Freddie Mercury, Phil Gibson and Jo Cassidy, who all performed free of charge, enabling a grand total of 380 euros to be gathered for the fund. Another fund-raiser came when Anne Sculthorp and Anne Feather, from the Friends Bar on Golf del Sur, took part in a sponsored swim at a nearby private pool at Alamos Park, kindly offered by owners Rachel and Richie. Together, the two Annes swam one mile in an hour and a huge sum of 1,150 euros was raised. The event was followed with entertainment, which was a splash hit, especially when some guests were thrown into the pool fully clothed!
On behalf of Liz (Helping Hands President), Dot and Julie, we thank everyone for all the support and look forward to seeing you again at our next charity event. It won’t be far away! |
