WINGATE seniors were in the spotlight last week with their Dia de Canaria celebrations.
Not to be outdone, the infants were adamant that their efforts on such a special day should also be recognised in Canarian Weekly. As Canarians and residents know, 30th May is an important day in the Tenerife calendar, dating back to 1983, when the “Canarian nationality” was truly recognised. Such things have little meaning to young children, generally. However, on the eve of Dia de Canaria (Friday, 29th May) the infants’ school came alive with Canarian traditions. Some of the parents offered their support and, to the delight of the youngsters, showed them how children used to make toys from cactus plants! It was amazing to see how something so simple could capture the imagination and creativity of the infants. Next, the Reception class had a go at a traditional Canarian dance – very complicated for five-year-olds. But the children loved it and went in the right direction most of the time! Finally, teachers and infants all sampled some cake, made from Gofio, honey and oil. Needless to say, the children enjoyed their treat The entire school dressed in Canarian costumes (if they had them – teachers included) – and a great day was had by all. |
