CD Tenerife 3 Real Murcia 1
THE joy of presenting a radio show for a living is that you get to hear a lot of music. Often, a tune will pop into your head that reflects your current mood. Well, it does for me anyway! So just after half-time, I couldn’t get the song One Day Like This, by Elbow, out of my head. “…it’s looking like a beautiful day” was going round and round my head. I’m sure the Dorada breakfast was to blame, but it felt perfect. It was a scorching day in Santa Cruz –82f and not a cloud in the sky. Kicking back, watching some breath-taking football with fine company. Oh, and your side are winning 3-0. “…it’s looking like a beautiful day”. Indeed! This was such a pleasing performance. Tenerife went into this lunch-time kick-off under pressure after every side around them had won. You wouldn’t know it, though. They controlled the game from the first kick to the very last. They swaggered past their poor opponents and dominated in a style which only Barcelona or Real Madrid fans can experience regularly. It’s no exaggeration when I tell you they could have won 10-1. Forget the fact that the visitors were missing half a side through injury and suspension. They still had the bulk of the team who were playing in La Liga last season. They also fielded ex-Chelsea star Enrique De Lucas and former Liverpool player Antonio Nunez. You wouldn’t have known it, though. Tenerife made their usual fast start and Juanlu hit the bar after five minutes. For me, his effort from the edge of the area was a mis-hit cross, but it didn’t matter. It gave him all the confidence in the world and would be the catalyst for his best-ever Tenerife performance. Every time he got the ball he looked dangerous and poor old Campos, the Murcia left-back, must still be having nightmares. The only surprise was that it took Tenerife 23 minutes to score. Alfaro started the move, dispossessing Movilla and playing it wide to right-back Marc Betran. Juanlu made a run for the byline, drawing the defender, and Betran spotted Alfaro’s onward charge. The cross was perfect and Alfaro, the smallest man on the park, headed past the hapless Elia. Nino then squandered a few chances. It would be one of those days for “God”, and the talk at half time was how many Tenerife would get. Murcia looked what we suspected they would be: cannon fodder. CDT went for the throat after the break and I needed just six minutes to get Elbow into my head. The second goal, after 48mins, was a near carbon-copy of Alfaro’s opener. This time, Bertran went on one of his mazy runs. He beat two players, drew Campos out of position and then slipped the ball to Juanlu, who found the head of Alfaro at the near post. Murcia were mentally on the plane as Alfaro celebrated his 17th goal of a glorious campaign. He is quite a player. He seems to drift in and out of games and must be a nightmare to play against. Just when you think you have him covered, he is gone. He’s as slippery as Peter Mandelson, and if Tenerife make one signing this summer, I pray it’s this little genius from Sevilla. Moments after his second, Juanlu got a rare goal. I’ve mentioned before it’s the only thing that lets him down, and on Sunday he finally got it right in front of goal. It was another simple, yet well-crafted move. Juanlu ran at Campos, played a wall pass with Nino and smashed the ball past Elia from eight yards. Glorious, and so well deserved. Tenerife treated the rest of the match like a practice game and Nino should have helped himself to a hat-trick. One miss, after he rounded the keeper, had to be seen to be believed. But it didn’t matter a jot, and Aquino’s goal for Murcia was irrelevant. Five points clear of fourth with six games to go. Lovely! Canarian Weekly ratings

Tomorrow (Saturday), Tenerife face the final challenge, travelling to fourth-placed Hercules in a tasty grudge match. Earlier in the season, Tenerife won a fiery encounter which saw Hercules talisman Tote sent off after a clash with Martinez. Well, when I say a clash, I really mean that Martinez outsmarted Tote. The two had a battle all match and the Tenerife skipper gave the striker a sly dig off the ball. Tote was incensed and, like a red rag to a bull, charged in on Martinez the very next moment, right in front of the ref. Martinez went down like the offspring of Ronaldo and Drogba, and Tote was red-carded. It took him four minutes to leave the field, and their chance of victory went with him. The hosts know they must win, while another away result will as good as promote Tenerife. So don’t miss this match, which is live on TV Canarias at 5pm.
