Tenerife Sur-Reina Sofia airport is expected to receive this summer between the end of March to the end of October an estimated 5,283,654 passengers with over 32,215 aircraft movements according to AENA; the figures have been collated by the 81 airlines using the airport.
These figures have risen above those of Los Rodeos airport in the North of the island who have an estimated 3,890,156 passengers (arrivals and departures) with 39,694 aircraft journeys. The overall passenger figure for the whole of the Canary Islands is an estimated 186,057, 931 seats. At the moment the figures released by the South airport from last month registered a total of 538,967 passengers, 5.9% less than in June 2007. Last year figures, according to AENA, came to 8.6 million a drop of 2.3% compared to the previous year 2006. It is estimated that this year the figures will remain more or less the same as those of 2007. On the tourist side of things the figures released by Ashotel for hotel occupation in the month of June 2008 were about the same as June 2007 with 67.18% occupancy this year and 67.83% last year. The tourist councillor from the town hall of Arona, David Herrera, is optimistic that August hotel occupation could rise to the figure of 80% according to Ashotel.
He says there was a rise in offers for 4 and 5 star hotels but he said he wasn’t in agreement with the all inclusive properties as it was unfair that the local businesses were suffering.
The tourist councillor for Adeje, Miguel Angel Santos, commented that in his opinion the first 5 months of the year had been promising and had given a positive image, he was optimistic they would recuperate the German market, stabilise the British market and increase the intake of the eastern European market.
