Emaciated Canarian hunting dogs wandering along TF-1, half starved full breds picking through trash bins in search of a meal, puppies roaming construction sites, scared confused and alone…… these images are becoming all too common on an Island where animal abuse and neglect has manifested as a monumental dilemma.
Yorkie, a 5 month old Schnauser cross is a living example of the extent of the lack of concern for animal welfare in Tenerife. He was found alongside the TF1 where he had been left to die, with 2 broken back legs, 2 broken hips and severely damaged kneecaps. He is currently being cared for at Live Arico Animal Protection, an animal refuge that is working frantically to raise the 1000 euros needed to provide him with the surgery and veterinarian care that will save his life. Your help in this matter would be greatly appreciated and your donation, no matter the size, could be the factor that gives him a second chance at life.
Live Arico currently has 110 dogs in their temporary rescue facility. Operating purely off donations from caring individuals and fund raising activities, Live Arico has preserved the lives of, and found good caring homes for hundreds or previously maltreated animals in Tenerife. The animals in the protection of Live Arico have 24 hour care and live in groups where they can play and socialise freely. But currently the refuge is under a great deal of financial stress. With the current surge of animals needing their help and the escalating costs of food and veterinarian care, Live Arico is in desperate need of monetary donations to remain in operation.
On the evening of October 27th, at “Summer Nights” a fundraising event will be held in Los Cristianos. It is being planned as a fun family event with plenty of entertainment for all ages. More details will be forthcoming in upcoming issues of this newspaper.
There are a variety of ways that anyone concerned can help the animals at Live Arico. Bar and business owners can consider holding benefit nights or placing collection boxes in their establishments, volunteers and dog walkers are always welcome and of course, any financial contributions to help Yorkie and all of the other wonderful dogs at the refuge would be greatly appreciated. We are also in need of good loving homes for the many dogs that we have. |
