Flys, Glass Eyes and Weavers - The BWFC May Fishing Competition - 08.06.2007
By John Williams – IGFA Certified Captain

The Blue Water Fishing Club May Competition was held on Saturday 12th May and was sponsored by Furniture World of Las Chafiras. Ten boats took part and a great day was had by everyone despite fishing being a little slow. The weather more than made up for the lack of bites, as they say, having a bad days fishing is better than having a good day at work!
In reality the bad days fishing was not that bad at all, most of the boats actually caught fish; it was just that only three caught fish that qualified for a prize.  “Backus” Skippered by Ken Sadler once again fished his ‘Secret Mark’ known only to a selected few and brought up  a 1.5 Kg Glass Eye from over 450 metres on the Electric Rig, thereby qualifying  for the prize. John Williams on ´Panamena´ caught a 25 cm Lizard Fish on the Fly and qualified for the Fly Fishing Trophy. Eric Rennison who shares ownership of ‘Tenderet’ with fishing partner Malcolm Hufton won the first trophy for the boat. They were fishing in San Juan Bay and brought up a good example of the poisonous Weaver Fish which weighed in at 1.15 Kg, not quite up to the World Record for that species held by Club Member John Williams but quite sufficient to win the Hand Line Trophy for the Competition.
The Prize-giving was held that evening at the Pergola Restaurant, Puerto Colon. The BWFC President, Al Pond presented the prizes to the winners and Trevor Birch, the Sponsorship Secretary, received the Trophy on behalf of the Sponsors, Furniture World.
