Doubles Competition – Friday 28th September
2007
This was played at two venues resulting in two winners going through to
the 'FINALS NIGHT' on Friday 28th March.
It was played as a best of three ‘501' knockout format with the final
of the each venue to be played as a best of five, with a third place play
off on the ‘FINALS NIGHT' for the two losing pairs which will be best
of five.
The two winning pairs will play best of seven on the 'FINALS NIGHT'
80 league players formed 40 pairings and the matches were spread across
three venues, The Beer Engine, Los Toscales and Swiggs Bar. At each venue,
the matches were played to a venue winner with a round robin format determining
the eventual doubles winners on the future finals night. It was all to
play for.
At Swiggs Bar, favorites Calum and Del Boy overcame the opposition and
were the venue winners. At The Beer Engine, some great darts from Toscales
players Big Steve Wray and (you aint seen me, alright) Andy Duck saw them
take the glory. At Toscales, Chairman Jonny, partnered by Bubbles (AKA
Paula Radcliffe, due to their similar physiques and their love for wearing
vests) found themselves in the venue final against Dom and Ray from the
Target Bar A team. In a very close final, the advantage ebbed and flowed
between the two pairings before the lads from the Target Bar won by 3
games to 2. An ecstatic Ray and coolness personified Dom turned to me
and with huge smiles on their face said “ will you give us a good
write up now we have won?”. I said I would but as the Chairman of
the league I had to reiterate to them that the write up would have to
be far, honest and truthful.
So, just for Dom and Ray I would like to accurately describe the final.
I have never witnessed nor been involved in a more flukey darts match
victory than this. How they won, throwing erratic and to be honest, second
rate darts still leaves me baffled. All I can put our defeat down to was
Bubbles who whispered to me, “Jonny, shall we let them win, they
have never won anything and the way they play probably never will. I think
they may burst into tears if we beat them?”. I duly obliged so we
lost but in our hearts both Bubbles and I know we did the right thing.
What I cant understand is some people in the past, have accused Bubbles
and I of being bad losers. Well played boys!
