La Liga Halfterm Report |
Last weekend Tenerife held highflying Valencia to a goaless draw at
the Heliodoro. With a little bit of luck CDT might have even taken all
three points, but it is still very much a point gained. The result leaves
Tenerife in the bottom three on goal difference, but there is much to
play for in the second half of the season. But at the halfway point,
how are the teams faring?
Barcelona
The defending champions have been a cut above everyone once again. Zlatan
Ibrahimovic has settled in well and with Thierry Henry back to his best
Barca have had the luxury of resting Lionel Messi at times. Tenerife
lad Pedro is turning into a superstar. Barca's title to lose.
Real Madrid
Coach Manuel Pellegrini has been on a hiding to nothing since his appointment
after the mega spending in the summer. He was nearly sacked in November
and he is under pressure again with Real five points behind Barca. Whilst
Ronaldo has done very well, suspensions aside, Kaka and Benzema have
been disasters. They are still fragile at the back and will be praying
for an unlikely Barca wobble. Champions League is their best bet for
silverware.
Valencia
For me they have been the story of the season. They have debts that
rival Manchester United yet they have somehow kept David Villa and David
Silva. They have charged to third place off the back of some eyecatching
football and they should comfortably get a Champions League financial
lifeline. A joy to watch.
Mallorca
The surprise package of the campaign, they are fourth thanks largely
to their home form. Nine wins from nine matches with just three conceeded
says it all. Remains to be seen if they can maintain that form as sides
will start lining up much more defensively. Just one away win and that
must change if they are to challenge for the Champions League.
Deportivo
I've liked their attitude this season. They have a thin squad but they
are well drilled and work incredibly hard. There was lots to like about
them when they on in Santa Cruz early in the season and their form has
been consistant. They may yet steal fourth place.
Sevilla
The season's great underachievers. Flat track bullies who can batter
teams when in the mood of simply switch off when the going gets tough.
Their recent defeat to Racing summed them up perfectly. African Nations
Cup no excuse for their recent slump and even though they look good
in Europe, there is a feeling all is not well in the dressing room.
Getafe
Another solid season for a side that is similar to Fulham in the Premier
League. Seven wins from nine home wins has set the season up for another
Europa League challenge. Going well in the Copa Del Rey and silverware
could be on the cards.
Athletic Bilbao
Bilbao made their best ever start to a top flight campaign but they
have tailed off since thanks to a heavy schedule that included some
tricky Europa League ties. Their recent win over Real Madrid shows what
they can do and they are a match for anyone, but they should be doing
better against the minnows on the road.
Villareal
The Yellow Submarine really fired after an awful start that saw them
win just one of their first nine. Home form still solid and even though
they have struggled in recent weeks they will have no relegation concerns
in this rebuilding year.
Sporting Gijon
A poor mans Sevilla. Brilliant one week, awful the next. Their top quality
fans fear they could be sucked into the relegation battle but they look
too strong for that. Away form a worry and they will miss influential
midfielder Michel who has joined Birmingham.
Atletico Madrid
Another poor start ruined any chance of European football next season.
They were woeful in the Champions League and just as bad in La Liga.
Green shoots of recovery recently after a major dressing room rant from
coach Quique Flores. Major stars look like staying until the end of
the season and it will be interesting to see how they fare.
Osasuna
Have surprised a few with how well they have done this season especially
against the big boys. Walter Pandiani has rolled back the clock with
some magnificent performances, yet for all their success they are still
in the relegation dogfight. A few poor results, and they have some big
games coming up, could see them flounder.
Racing
What a difference a month can make. At the end of November they were
odds on for relegation, but a change of manager and the crowning of
a new wonderkid has changed the whole fans perception. Still in Copa
Del Rey at time of writing and the whole world is watching Sergio Canales
who could do a Theo Walcott and make the Spanish World Cup squad from
nowhere.
Espanyol
They hung on to their La Liga status by the skin of their teeth last
season and they may need some similar luck this time, because they are
in deep trouble. Just one win and three goals on the road and morale
low in the dressing room. Clown keeper Kameni has been an embaressment
in the African Nations Cup and he could single handedly sent the Barcelona
mob down.
Almeria
Just one win in their last six and the honeymoon period is over for
new coach Lillo after he replaced Hugo Sanchez. Goitom's goals will
be crucial and they have some vitally important matches coming up over
the next few weeks. They may just find three sides worse than them,
but it will be a close run thing.
Malaga
They have improved recently after a shocking start. They struggle in
front of goal, but they are a big bulky ugly side that is well equipped
for a relegation battle. They could be the one team that goes on a run
and gets out of trouble.
Valladolid
My pre season relegation tip have not let me down and they are in deep
trouble. Just two homes wins and they have had a few spankings recently.
They are short on bodies and short on class. Should go down
Tenerife
We know how tough a season it has been for Jose Luis Oltra's side. But
there was lots to like about the way they played against Valencia and
their Santa Cruz form will be vital. Some very winable matches coming
up and hand on heart I think they will survive. Just.
Real Zaragoza
They started well with a fortunate win over Tenerife and were mid table
until December when a rot set in. The big signings such as Jermaine
Pennant have not panned out and they are in real danger of an instant
return to the second division.
Xerez
No money, no class players and no hope of staying up. Competitive for
an hour but they tire badly and they have been on the end of some serious
thumping's.
